Sacrament of Anointing of the Sick

Sacrament of Anointing of the Sick

In the book of James we read,

“Is anyone among you sick, let him bring in the presbyters (priests) of the Church and let them pray over him,

anointing him oil in the name of the Lord.

And the prayer of faith will save the sick person and the Lord will raise him up and if he be in sins,

they shall be forgiven him.” (James 5: 14-15).

Anointing of the sick grants spiritual aid and strength. It also restores one with spiritual health which may include remission of sins. Oil blessed by a bishop is used by the priest on the forehead and hands of the person receiving the sacrament. The sacrament also includes prayers and the laying on of hands. This healing sacrament can be received more than one time, as one may recover from illness but undergo future physical, emotional, or spiritual challenges.
